Try a Bow Tie

Hey Preps!

For those that know me, know I am a huge sucker for bow ties.  They are just a party.  Any guy who wants to stand out in an obnoxiously classic and fun way will rock a bow tie.  I am jealous that men get to wear them...I want one!

I was reading back through my past posts, and decided it was about time to write about my most beloved men's accessory again.  So, I did a little research, and picked out my favorite bow ties from different preppy companies shown below:

(Photo Credits: Starboard Clothing Co., Carolina Cotton Bow Ties,
Anchored Style, High Cotton Ties)

  1.  Kau'i by Carolina Cotton Bow Ties has a great color combination.  For those gents who rock colored chino pants, this bow tie can be worn in both the summer and winter months...just match it with a pair of red chinos in the winter, or a pair of light pink/green in the winter.  Match made in heaven.
  2. Flying Scot reversible bow tie from High Cotton Ties is a perfect summer bow tie that combines classic gingham with a summer plaid.  Now who is ready for summer so they can wear this guy?
  3. Lenox Flannel bow tie from High Cotton Ties is strictly a winter tie.  I love bow ties that utilize different fabrics other than just cotton, and this is a perfect example.  Change of the texture of a bow tie to a winter fabric, add a winter plaid, and you have the perfect Christmas bow tie (a little late this year)!
  4. Whale Golf Club bow tie by Vineyard Vines, is perfect for those Bubba Watson wanna-bes who have casual summer events they are planning to attend.  I love how VV took their classic whale logo and stuck it on the ends of the golf clubs.  I'm sold.
  5. Andrew Howard Tattersall Beau by Starboard Clothing Co. is quite possibly my favorite beau of the bunch.  I am obsessed with pink and green...ya ya...you may be too, but not like me...come to my house and I will prove it to you.  The combination of my two favorite colors in a tattersall pattern.  The sky is the limit with what you can pair this bow tie with.
  6. CPL. Spires Digital Camo Beau is a Special Edition beau by Starboard Clothing Co., and is one of the beaus I have actually purchased as a gift in the past.  It is perfect for any military gent who likes to add a little flare to his wardrobe.  The duck cloth that this bow tie is made out of, gives it a unique feel and look.  Additionally, part of the profits made from this beau is given to the Wounded Warrior Project.  A patriotic-inspired beau that supports are military?  Love the concept.
  7. Navy Signal Flag Woven Bow Tie by Anchored Style is perfect for all those sailors or nautical-living gents who lean towards a clean-cut look when picking their bow ties.  Signal flags on a woven tie gives this bow tie a classic All-American feel.
Gents, don't be shy...try a bow tie!

(I am sitting here laughing at my own little cheesy rhyme I just made...seriously I can't stop...ahh I crack myself up.)

But really, if you want to win a girls initial approval (at least this one's) give one a try!
What is your favorite bow tie?
Have a blessed day y'all!

Run Like a Girl

Hey Preps!

My pup and I post-marathon

It was 3:30 in the morning, and I gave up on sleep.  The anticipation of an event that I had spent months training for and visualizing kept me from sleeping until my 4:00 alarm sounded.  For the first time, I didn't mind waking up prior to my alarm.  I was ready.  Out of bed I went, and into my running attire.  Then there was the pre-race rituals, oatmeal, stretching, and packing my SPEEDO bag until it was jammed full (I have this thing about leaving space in bags).  I was ready.  It was marathon day.

My dad is the best in the world.  I am sure of it.  Only he, would wake up at the same time as me, to meet me at my apartment and drive me into Pittsburgh for my big race.  He is my biggest fan and best friend.  He also knows exactly what to/what not to say at all the right times.  I can't remember a single race throughout my life that my father wasn't at cheering me on.  That alone says so much about the amazing person he is.

He knows my race rituals.  He also knows I don't talk very much before races.  So, for the most part we remained mutually quiet during the drive.  A past marathoner himself, he knows exactly what I am about to endure.  He told a few stories that eased my nerves...and gave me a ton of encouragement as we parted ways at the starting line.

Here we go...

Pre-race you get corralled into different sections based on your seed time.  I made it into my corral and waited with 25,000 other people for the starting shotgun sound.  Away we went...

I had spent months training for this.  Today was the day to accomplish something I had dreamed about for years.  I couldn't help but smiling as I fell into my pace and let my feet do the cruisin.  Over bridges, up hills, winding everywhere throughout Pittsburgh, I was proud.  I had so much pride for what I was doing, and for my city.  Running through the towns of Pittsburgh, and having the incredible support of so many people was emotionally moving for me.

Every so often I would glance at my watch to check my pace, but was nervous when I passed mile 8, and my pace was right on track with what my dad had thought I should be running (I thought it was too fast).  I had a slight freakout moment.

"Am I going to fast? What if I die at the end?"

I started playing mind games...but listened to my body, and my heart, and kept pushing my pace.  I wasn't going to let the psychological part of the race beat me.

The course started heading down into the South Side of Pittsburgh, and there he was.  Mile 10.2.  My stink bug flushing, supportive, gentleman was there to cheer me on.

"Come on Kalyn, your ahead of pace...keep it up! You look strong!"

I blushed as I glanced back down at my feet after making eyes at him.  No slowing down, no giving up.

Part of the reason I decided to run the marathon was to work through my past.  I run through my problems, and I signed up for the marathon after a break-up.  Months of training, and recovering, and there I was, running the race that helped me overcome emotions, a damaged heart, and the limits I had previously placed on myself.

Never in a million years did I think I would have the guy who "made me blush" for over a year at the gym supporting me as I was running my big race.  It is so funny how life works, and how much running alone has given me.  I look back on the past few months, and running is what really has saved me.  I am a much happier person now, and I thought I was happy before.

Mile 15 came...there was my loving father.  Taking pictures and running along the road next to me.

"Great pace KK you are killing it!"

What a great dad.

I kept pushing.  I was beginning to feel the pain, my muscles ached, they cramped, but I kept going.

Mile 22...pushing through the wall

Mile 22. The wall came.  Every muscle in my legs felt fatigued, my pace started to fall...then all of a sudden, I see my dad, running along the sidewalk next to me.  He ran the whole mile uphill with me until the 23 mile marker.  He knew this is where I would be struggling, and he was there to help me through it.

Do you have amazing people like this in your life?  That will help you work through any adversities, heart break, and pain you may endure?  Who support you and your passions?  If so, appreciate them.  They don't come along very often.

I slowly worked through the pain and worked back up to my pace.  Mile 25 came...ONE MORE MILE, and of course it was uphill.  I pushed myself.  I somehow found the strength to kick my stride into full gear as I sprinted into the finish.  I clocked out three minutes before my goal...and the second I officially crossed the finish line, every muscle in my body stopped working...and I peed my pants.  Yep. couldn't even hold my bladder.  Always have to make a grand entrance.

I peed my freaking pants.

There I was.  Wet pants, sweaty, exhausted, and incredibly happy.  I did it.  26.2 miles.  I had overcome pain (both emotional and physical), stereotypes, psychological negativity, and had done something I had always wanted to do.

There is nothing like setting a goal, working hard, and achieving it.  What are you going to achieve that you have deemed impossible?

Margaritas on my Mind

(Easter Sunday Outfit: Lilly Pulitzer Dress, Steve Madden Sling-back Sandals,
and a Vintage, Changeable, Lilly Pulitzer Clutch)
I love spring, it means Pink and Green!

Ok, so I am just gonna vent for a second.  I am so hungry right now.  I am sitting at work and Food Network is on.  Fried twinkies.  Fried macaroni and cheese.  Everything fried seems to be the theme.  Of course someone would want to be watching the Food Network while they are working out, causing me to reap the cons of such a show.

My training for the marathon is coming to an end.  That means this final month is TAPER.  I love tapering because it means less mileage and a higher intensity.  Go hard or go home type of mindset its needed.  However, what I hate about tapering, is the fact that I have to start cutting back on the calories/fat in my diet.  When you are running 60+ miles a week, it's easy to let your diet slide a bit.  Trust me, I have been an eating machine.

When your mileage decreases though, the diet becomes more important. This means no drinking in season (there goes my glass of vino until October), eating lean protein, and lots of veggies, limiting my sugar/fruit intake, and keeping the closest eye on my carb intake.  Since I am gluten-free, I turn my nose up at most carbs because of what they do to my body.  Yet, when my aunt makes me G-free Pumpkin Muffins, and it's time for me to cut...it's really not fun staring at them and having them stare back at you.

The month before a huge race is when I start watching everything I consume.  If it doesn't benefit my body in some way, and help to make me a better athlete, I don't eat it.  Trust me, it's extremely hard...and it means denying a ton of cravings and sometimes being a little bit hungry.

Last night I was texting my girlfriend, and mentioned how super bummed I was that my race was the day after Cinco De Mayo.  Kids, I love me some mexican food.  Everything I can eat.  Corn tortillas, rice, beans...it's a carb heaven for G-free people like me.  I also love me some Margaritas.  Mucho grande por favor.

So, as soon as this race is over, and I am fully hydrated and functioning again.  I WILL have a Margarita, and the biggest enchilada I see.  Then it will be back to training and cutting for Triathlons.

What is the point of writing this?  First, I just needed to express my hunger.  Now I feel much better.  Second, I wanted to stress the importance of nutrition.  It is equally if not more important than your daily cardio and weight session if you are trying to lose weight.  I know it stinks sometimes, and isn't easy to always eat well.  Trust me, I am a huge fan of Skittles and Ice Cream.  However, you have to look at how the food you are eating will benefit or hurt you in the long run.  Doing so, will help you make better decisions.  I promise.

So I challenge you to eat well for a week, deny those processed foods, sugars, and fattening cravings.  You will feel so much better...and be on your way to a healthier lifestyle!

Polo Dresses and Stink Bugs

Hey Preps!

(Outfit of the Day: I love my green Vineyard Vines Polo Dress, it's as comfy as sweats.
I paired it with a Lacoste headband, and Coastal Skimmers from L.L.Bean)

Have you ever seen a stink bug?  They practically invaded Pittsburgh.  Recently I moved into a new house, and we have this little issue with stink bugs finding some way inside the house.  Yuck.  So last night I was reading, and glanced up just to see a stinker scurrying up my wall.  I had a minor freak-out, and calmed myself down enough to grab a wad of toilet paper, gently pluck the insect from the wall, and drown it in a swirling fury down the toilet.  Kalyn 8, Stink Bugs 0.  My count was up to eight in a 24 hour span.  Disgusting.

Did you know that if you smash a stink bug, that they give off an odor that attracts more of the gross little things?  SEE BUG.  FREAK OUT. SMASH BUG.  It's practically human nature for us to attack at first glance when seeing a bug, yet if we do that with a stink bug, we are fighting an uphill battle.  You must wait for the right moment to snatch it up, and dispose of it somewhere far far away, or do the barbaric thing a flush that sucker out of your house.

I am the weirdest.  After this post, I am convinced I am...but how many times do our impulses attract more hard decisions in our life?  Impatient and stubborn are two words that I will honestly call myself.  I admit they are flaws of mine.  I have always been one who wants what she wants the second she wants it, regardless of whether it is the right thing in the long run or not.  How many times has that hurt me in my life?  Just like the instant thought to squish a stink bug leads to a much bigger problem?

Sometimes, we just need to let go of situations, and know that not everything is in our hands.  There is not a single time that you will be in complete control of your life.  Sure, you can do all the right things to prepare yourself in a way that avoids trauma, but in the end nothing ever works out the way we planned it.

I have always been one to try to take rein of my life.  Every time I try, I am taught to be patient.  It feels really good to say that for the first time in my life, I am fine with letting things happen the way they are meant to be.  Sure, I give everything my very best, but I know that I can't keep smushing the stink bugs in my life...because they will come back to bite me eventually.

I am currently in the taper stage for my marathon.  I am anxious for it to be over so I can start fully training for Triathlons again...yet I know I can't over train.  How did I learn that?  A past full of shoulder, shin, knee, and ankle injuries.  I now listen to what my body is telling me, and I know the difference between a good hurt and a "I just fractured my foot" kind of hurt.  Sometimes that means not doing everything I wanted to (which is very hard for me to do), but I know that listening to my body will pay off in the end when I didn't over train and hurt something.

The same goes for careers and relationships.  I kept forcing my last relationship to work, when it clearly wasn't meant to be for quite some time.  I was up late at night in tears waiting to hear from him, exhausted, and mentally and emotionally drained in class.  Why did I stick with something that was making me so unhappy for so long? I was stubborn.  I kept trying to dispose of the stink in our relationship in all the wrong ways.

Now I am so happy.  I am finally doing things I only dreamed of doing.  I have an amazing support network to fall back on if I need them...and I can honestly say that I am just Kalyn.  Just me.  A little girly who loves pink and green, writing, running her feet off, swimming like a fishy, teaching fitness classes, and appreciating the world around me.

I recently wrote that when you are happy being by yourself, someone who appreciates you for who you are will find you.  Well guess what?  Mr. Makes Me Red in the Face and I are still talking.  We are taking it super slow, and I like it that way.  Yet, he supports me for the freak I am.  He respects the fact I wake up at ungodly hours to hit the pool or go on a long run.  He wants to be there for me at all my races.  My ADHD stories that are overly enthusiastic and detailed make him laugh...and it is great to have someone who does appreciate the weird Kalyn.  I don't know where the future is for us, but I am fine not knowing.  Who knows if we will ever end up in a serious relationship...but never have I spent time with someone who is so grounded in who he is, and so driven to do his best...not to mention someone who is caring enough to listen to me ramble about my distance run and what each mile felt like and the philosophical meaning behind stink bugs.

I laughed last night as I was leaving his house.  He is a financial advisor, which means suits and ties and brief cases.  I am a personal trainer which means running shoes, kettle bells, and sports bags. As I was leaving, I picked up my lifting shoes (I never wear my running shoes except to run...an OCD thing of mine) next to his dress shoes, my mesh swim bag up that had been covering his brief case, and thought "oh the irony".  He sees me in sweats every single day, and still likes me.  Now that is saying something.

The point is, we both have our own paths in life.  Striving for the best is something that is important, and the focus and balance between work, athletics, and relationships is evident in both of our lives.  I appreciate him for the person he is (even if he does prefer gory movies and giggle like no other man I know) and he appreciates me.

For the first time, I feel no pressure to impress a significant other...if I even will call him that one day.  Who knows, I am taking it day by day...but, I will say this:

I noticed this gent when I first started working at the gym.  I can talk to anyone about practically anything, but whenever he would come in, I found him so attractive, I couldn't even make eye contact with him.  I did think it was a hopeless cause until he asked me on a date a few months ago...but the funny thing is, he thought the same about me.  We both had little teenage crushes on each other and were too nervous to talk to one another.  Not only that, but I was dealing with another relationship that was already a squashed stink bug on the wall.  If that stink bug hadn't finally gotten flushed down the toilet, I might still be a mess...and would have missed out on the opportunity to get to know someone who I have the utmost respect for (and find incredibly sexy).

So my advice to you?  Stop squashing the stink bugs with impulses, and have the patience to wait for the right moment to gently remove them from your life.  Impatience gets you no where in life.  Take the time to grow up, and figure out who you are before needing someone else in your life...appreciate being single, and strive to be the best person you can be.  Someone will find that drive irresistible, and will love the weirdness in you.  You have to just let yourself be weird first.

Stink Bug number nine comes creeping by the window.  Mr. Makes me Red in the Face volunteers and flushes that sucker down for me.  What a gentleman.

You're Strange, but I Like You

Hey Preps!

Oh, I am as corny as it gets.  Sure, I can be forgetful.  Maybe I am not
serious enough...I am allergic to grass, but I am standing in it.  One of my
favorite outfits are skirts and wellies.  This is me, and I am okay with
whether you like it or not.  It won't make me change, because
I am happy the way I am.

Just watched this weeks episode of 'The Bachelor', which I DVR-ed.  Sometimes you just need time to unwind and watch a little bit of melodramatic TV.  'The Bachelor' is my show.  My girlfriend (and photographer) Amy, text the whole show.  Mostly it's cracking jokes at how desperate the girls are or why the bachelor is such a clueless knucklehead.  Regardless, it is my junkie TV fix for the week.

As I was watching the show today, I watched as several girls completely destroyed their chances of being Mrs. Bachelor, and they had no clue.  When they were rejected, they were shocked and kept wondering what they did wrong.  Statements like, "I tried to be everything he wanted" or "I gave up so much for him, why doesn't he want me, why am I not good enough" were common as they bawled their eyes out in the rejection limo.

It sounds completely pathetic but how many times do we do the same thing with a significant other?  We change for them, wrap our world around them, and try to be the best we can be...only to be left heartbroken and wondering what we could have done better to keep them.

My most recent past relationship, I gave up too much.  I was doing everything I could to make him happy, and that wasn't enough...I wasn't focusing on my career, what I wanted for my future, and was giving up my passions and time with friends to travel to see him.

When we broke up, I thought I was going to have a long road to recovery.  I didn't think I would ever find someone who compared to him...yet as I distanced myself from him and our past relationship, and started focusing on myself again, I have found true happiness.  I look at that relationship and see the flaws, not only his, but my own, which I stated above.  I have learned from what I did wrong in that relationship, and know I will never make those mistakes twice.

From now on, I am focusing on ME.  I have had so much more time to enjoy long runs, I am not tired from staying up late worrying about relationships, that I feel like I have the energy to accomplish whatever I wish.  There is no dwelling on when he will text me back when I go out with friends...the cell phone stays in the purse.  My career, social life, and fitness bring so much happiness into my life, that I wonder why I wasn't single sooner?

It feels so great to talk about my accomplishments, and to help others without having the distraction of worrying about pleasing someone else.  Ya feel me?

So why are we so desperate in relationships sometimes?  If they don't want to be with you, then let it be. Don't ever try to force something to stay together that isn't working.  Chances are if you are already struggling now, you will struggle if you end up together.  A relationship should be a safe place where you don't feel judged or worried about saying the right things in order to keep the other person happy.  They should be proud of who they are with...and if they aren't...someone else will be one day. I promise.

Back to this bachelor show thing, it isn't the end of the world to be broken up with.  It may temporarily feel that way, but you can't dwell on it.  For me, it was an eye opener on how much of myself I had given up.  So I didn't dwell on the past a minute more, and have been living my life to the fullest.  I am proud of who I am...sure I have quirks, and things that will drive my future husband bonkers someday.  Yet, I won't settle for someone who doesn't love those quirks and doesn't respect me for who I am.

I am a firm believer that you learn from every relationship you are in.  What you learn prepares you for your future relationship and makes you a better, stronger person.  I did learn a lot from my past, and I am just content growing up a little on my own right now.

That doesn't mean I don't talk to boys though.  Oh baby.  So here's the deal...like I said earlier I missed my favorite TV show.  That rarely happens...but I had to deal because I went on a date.  Amy texted me saying, "Sheesh you must like this guy if you are missing your show for him".  Oh yes, it was quite the sacrifice, but I am happy I did because I had a great time.  Sure, it wasn't my first date since being single, but this time was a tad different.  The conversation was great, the guy was dreamier than the bachelor, and I think I am still permanently red in the face from being so flustered the whole night.  I haven't felt that in a while.

Does that mean I am going to text him constantly, or start planning the wedding tomorrow?  Heck no!  I am busy.  There is NYC this weekend, spring break, school, my career and internship, my fitness... I don't have the time to possibly do that.  Neither does he, and I like that.

So my advice to you?  Be happy on your own before you try to be happy with someone else.  Someone right is out there for you, but don't go searching.  Instead, live your life to the fullest...because that is when Mr. or Mrs. Right will come around, and they will love you for the weirdo that you are.

You are a weirdo you know.  Almost as big of one as me.

Hope y'all are having a blessed week!

One of the Boys

Hey Preps!

It is snowing (and has been for the past three days)!  Like I said in my previous post, I hate cold weather...but...that excludes lots of white fluffy snowflakes making those ski resorts ever so irresistible!  I just want to go outside and play all day! Who is with me?!

A side introduction there, but winter for a preppy girl means a few things.  It means Wellies with fleece socks, duck boots, and lots of chunky pieces that include sweaters, heavier polos, corduroy, and tights.  A girl has got to survive in these climates, and for me, surviving them means sitting by my heater most nights, and layering these chunky/boyish pieces.

Did she say boyish?  Yep.  Sometimes a preppy girl is stuck with the predicament of having to wear pieces that look like she's one of the boys.  How then, can she possibly keep her girly appeal?  So glad you asked, because I have the answer.

When Menswear Meets the Girly Prep

When Menswear Meets the Girly Prep by pittsburghprep

Here is a perfect example of pairing menswear with feminine pieces.  Above the 'menswear' pieces are a Rugby Polo shirt, and penny loafers.  Both are known as classic masculine pieces that the ladies just couldn't resist to steal.

To prevent them from looking too manly, an easy way to balance these pieces is to add a classic corduroy skirt to the mix.  I once read somewhere (so it's credible, I just can't credit to the source) that men respect a woman more when she is in a skirt.  Now, I am not talking a hiked up mini skirt that shows all of your goods, I am talking a classic skirt like the one shown above.  So what perfect way to impress the gents than to pair some of his wardrobe favorites with a few girly ones of your own?

The other day, one of my best girlfriends who happens to be an amazing and creative photographer, Amy Rebekah Photography, and I had a play date together.  I put together some outfits, and she masterminded behind the lens.  Knowing I have been dying to explain this whole balance of the gender wearing stuff, I put together an outfit that exemplifies what I wrote about above:

(Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby Shirt)
(Kiel James Patrick's Jephson's Passage Traversed Bracelet
Lands' End Canvas Corduroy Skirt)
(Eastland Penny Loafers)

So ladies, are you willing to give menswear a try?
Hope y'all have a blessed day!

P.S. Be sure to check out Amy Rebekah Photography on Facebook (and expect a guest post from her shortly)!

Gents, Deck Your Trousers

Hey Preps!

Driving home yesterday, I passed at least 20 vehicles with their handpicked Christmas trees tenderly tied to the tops.  Everywhere you look, the signs of Christmas are evident.  The semester is finally coming to an end...with a few projects and finals looming in the way between a month off of school, and some much needed time with family and friends.

Let me tell you, Christmas is just the best time of the year.  There is music, lights, food, and time to truly enjoy the blessed lives we live.  There is so much giving, and conscious thought about each individual important in your life...it really makes you realize everything you take for granted on a daily basis.

There is so much excitement in Christmas, and in my opinion, I think it should be shown through your wardrobe.  Don't you agree?

So, in honor of being in Christmas spirit, I decided to share a few pairs of pants that I think are just perfect for a Gent to rock during this time of year:

"Tangled Cords"
are the perfect pair of pants to wear to any fun Christmas party.
To those college boys, I think these would be a great addition to an
"Ugly Sweater Party".

"Holiday Harmon Pants"
I love these two-toned corduroy pants.
Nothing says preppy Christmas like a pair of these tailored,
"go-to-hell" pants.

"Dandycanes"
These pants are 100% wool...and 100% holiday proof.
I love plaid in the winter, and nothing screams Christmas
like a pair of these festive trousers.  I am in pant heaven...

Gents, nothing wishes a merrier Christmas than a pair of festive pants!
Hope y'all are having a great start to the holiday season!

Gifts for Your Gent

Hey Preps!

Last night was an emotional one.  Do you ever have those nights where you just want to cry for no reason? Yup one of those nights.  Was it the fact that break went by too quickly?  OR was it the fact that this week I have a big grown-up girl interview for after I graduate college?  Maybe it was the fact that Patrick finds out what he is getting for Service Selection this week...

What is Service Selection?  It is when the First Class (seniors) at any Service Academy finds out what they will be doing for the following "X" amount of years (depending on what they are selected for).  Pat so badly wants to be a pilot.  He has done everything right during his years there to ensure this happens, however, is it enough?  Will the Navy look at his qualifications and put him in a position that he will be thrilled to serve our country doing?

I don't know.  No one knows.  It's terrible that at night I can't sleep anymore because of worrying that he will end up having to do something he hates. I am so stubborn that having a job doing something I hate would not flow well with my personality. Putting myself in Pat's shoes, I worry he will be miserable.  I truly do.

Little detour from where I was going with this, so let me bring you back...the point is, last night was an emotional roller coaster.  Guess who got the brunt of it?  Patrick.

So he called, and I was already crying.  Poor kid, he was NOT too happy to hear me sniffling over the phone to him.  Yet, he took the wrath of Kalyn.  Sure he made it known that he was really not happy about me crying but he sat there and listened (and knowing Pat rolled his eyes or played with something so he didn't have to listen the whole time...which is definitely a good thing).

Then, Pat slowly eased me into new conversations...and by the end of the phone call, normal happy Kalyn was back.

So my point is Pat puts up with a lot.  Soooo, in honor of his putting up with a lot, I made a Polyvore with Christmas gifts inspired by him...

First on the list, a Tartan button-down from J.Crew.  Boy, am I a sucker for Tartan during Christmas time.  It's so cozy and festive (and nice to touch).  Definitely a shirt I would encourage any lady to give to her gent.

Bean Boots are perfect for winter seasons.  I honestly couldn't survive the hasty snow and ice of Pennsylvania winters without mine...so why not ensure your beau's toes stay toasty as well and buy him a pair?  Plus, Bean Boots are up there on the list of "sexiest things a guy could wear according to Kalyn".  Thought I'd mention that.  Take it as you wish.

Flasks are fun.  Tacky line, but so true...I really enjoy the needlepoint flasks from Smathers&Branson, and think they are a great gift to give the Fraternity Bro...or someone who wishes he were in a Frat, kind of like my boyfriend.

Gents wear through wallets.  You fine young men out there really abuse those things.  You sit on them flip them wide open so they are the flimsiest poor excuses of wallets I've ever seen.  I honestly look at mens' wallets and have sympathy for them.  That being said, a guy can always stock up on a wallet or two, so he has a few lined up waiting their turn in the torture chamber known as a Gents' back pocket.

Belts.  I love them.  Probably my favorite accessory...you have so many to choose from, ribbon belts, needlepoint belts, canvas, leather...you name it.  They are a fun gift to give, and definitely a way you can be creative to fit your man's style.

Speaking of Tartan, how about a Tartan tie?  The one on the Polyvore is great. I love the colors used, and definitely think this would be a great gift to give a guy for Christmas.

Pat has strict guidelines on what he can/cannot wear with his uniform. So, last year I bought him this very same Lacoste watch as a fun present.  He can wear it on weekends, and it adds a little extra flare to the boring watches the Mids have to wear during the week.

My favorite type of Ray-Bans?  The Clubmasters.  Especially on guys.  Talk about making me melt.

Kiel James Patrick bracelets are fun for guys to wear.  I really find them cute, and a great little gift to give a guy on Christmas.

So there you have it.  My personal guide to Christmas gifts for your Gent.
Keep Pat in your prayers...he finds out his Service Selection in less than two days...yikes!

P.S.  No, Pat...these are none of your gifts.  Way sneakier than that!

What I'm Wishing For

Hey Preps!

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and there is exactly a month until Christmas.  The holidays surely have crept up on me this year, and before I can truly enjoy them...there are quite a lot of papers to be written, tests to be taken, and chapters upon chapters to be read.  Yet, the anticipation of Christmas always seems to make the last few weeks of the semester a little bit 'cheery-er'.

So, even though I turned on my computer to attempt a paper...I ended up writing a new post instead.  It is so much easier for me to write about something I love.  My blog is a passion of mine.  An outlet.  My fun thing I treat myself to when the homework is done.  Yet, why can't I seem to have the same passion when writing a nine page paper for a class I dislike?

Anyways, that's besides the point.  The point is we have 30 days until Christmas!  That is it!  Eeeeeek!
Excitedly, I have started putting together some Polyvores themed with gifts.  I thought I would start off the gift ideas with a Polyvore of items I would be thrilled to receive this Christmas:
Christmas List 2011

J Crew cable knit sweater
$178 - jcrew.com

J Crew trench coat
$250 - jcrew.com

J.Crew waterproof boots
$178 - jcrew.com

Tory Burch ballet flat
$235 - bergdorfgoodman.com

Kate spade handbag
$177 - katespade.com

Michael kors watch
amazon.com

J.Crew retro sunglasses
$420 - jcrew.com

C. Orrico Lilly Pulitzer Toasty Mittens Hotty Pink The Gangs All Here
$48 - corrico.com

So what's on my list?

The first item, is a Cable-knit sweater...I already have a few, but you can never go wrong with a traditional and cozy sweater.  The color of the one on my Polyvore (found at J. Crew) is really playful, and could definitely jazz up a simple gray pencil skirt, or a pair of jeans...it works with any look you are going for.

Next on the list, is a military-inspired trench coat (also from J. Crew).  I love the royal blue color of this jacket, as well as the way it can be tied to show off your waist, while staying warm.  I always feel when I am dressing for the colder months that I look like a big puff ball in all of my layers.  This jacket would be a perfect way to avoid my typical puff ball look.  Practical and cute, that's my kind of clothing!

Speaking of practical and cute, Sperry Top-sider has the cutest Sheerwater Boots.  They are waterproof and have wool inside.  Plus the traction on them is great for any college girl dealing with the icky snow.  I have a pair of plaid ones that I am obsessed with, but I need a median between my Bean Boots, and my plaid Sheerwater Boots, so I am asking for this fun, pink lined one for Christmas.

As a prep, there are some times where you just have to add a little sparkle to your outfit.  What better way than adding a pair of sparkly, scaled, Tory Burch flats to your wardrobe?

Going down the list, the Kate Spade military inspired purse comes up again.  I love this purse so much that I even wrote a recent post on it.  I would love to see this under the tree Christmas morning.

I love watches.  ADHD is so much better managed with watches.  I actually have a problem that I like to call "phantom watch syndrome", where I accidentally look at my wrist to check the time even though I'm not wearing my watch.  Therefore, I think this Michael Kors watch is calling my name.  I love the turtoise patterning of it, and think it very versatile.

Next on the list, a pair of retro shades.  I have been dying to try a pair of early 60's inspired shades like these.  Definitely something unique, that can dress up a winter outfit.

Pink and green plus Lilly Pulitzer, in a warm mitten?  I love the C. Orrico mittens in the winter collection on Lilly's website.  They would be such a fun accessory that would make the winter months a little bit more manageable.

Finally, what could be preppier than the bangle by Lilly Pulitzer?  I love the pink and gold color combination, as well as the fish-scale look!  This would be such a fun gift to receive, don't you think?

Concluding, I still could go without all of these items and still be happy.  I truly can't wait for more time with my huge family and amazing friends this Christmas.  Still feeling extra blessed today.

What is on your Christmas list?

Thankful Thoughts

Hey Preps!

(Outfit of the day: Cinched Corduroy Dress from Lands' End Canvas
Gray Textured Tights
Carlos Santana Flats...don't judge...they are amazing!)

It's well after midnight, so maybe not officially Thanksgiving anymore...but that doesn't trump how incredibly thankful I am.  Today consisted of way too much food, family members overflowing within my house, and friends that you can spend months away from...yet still pick up right where you left.  Days where you are surrounded by those who love, support, and uplift you are the best.  There is absolutely no denying that.

I started questioning why we don't have more holidays like Thanksgiving today.  Why don't we constantly surround ourselves with positivity? Why are there so many days where I take the blessings in my life for granted? The whole binge eating thing should very intelligently be limited to once per year...yet everything else Thanksgiving stands for should be the way we live our daily lives shouldn't it?

So, as we complete another year of turkeys and pumpkin pie...I challenge you to radiate positivity and graciousness everywhere you go.  Truly take the time to think about everything you have been blessed with in your life, and appreciate those people and blessings that have created you to be the person you are today.

That being said, I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes, said by Mother Theresa; a woman who took her circumstances, and made the world better through them.

"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier."

Happy Thanksgiving Y'all!
God bless!

Flannel Fridays

Hey Preps!

It is Friday! Finally, Friday!

After a week of way too much work, I am ready for the weekend.  Actually, I was ready for the weekend four days ago.  Agree?

Fridays at my previous college were more than just 'finally', they were known as "Flannel Fridays".  You bet your bottom dollar that a solid 30% of the population rocked the plaid flannel button-downs every Friday starting in late Fall...the statement "Thank God it's not just Friday, but Flannel Friday" resonated throughout campus as the entire student body awaited the release from their last class of the week.

So today, given the appropriate weather conditions...I am repping the flannel button-down.  Flannel Fridays is taking a stand once again in my life, and I can't agree more with Flannel Friday's motto.

Flannel Fridays

Sometimes I think flannel can feel a little boyish on a girl, so to balance out the menswear I paired it with a suede mini skirt, and cinched it with a skinny leather belt.  Tory Burch boots are a weekend staple of mine in the fall, as well as a simple and chic bag such as the Dooney & Bourke one shown above.

So join with me in the tradition of celebrating Flannel Fridays...and...

Thank God it's not just Friday, but Flannel Friday.

Happy weekend y'all! God bless.

Beautiful Beaus for Winter

Hey Preps!

A little eye candy for you...
(from left to right: Rob, Gray, Ty, and Pat at Polo for Kids 2011)

...yes, I am occasionally graced with their presence...and fashion sense.

As you can see, they are all terrific at rocking the late summer/ early fall 'prep' look.  Each wearing colorful chino pants, and classic Vineyard Vine/ Southern Proper ties and bow ties.  However, it is time to transition to my favorite time of year for my wardrobe (not my weather condition preferences)...late fall/ early winter.

So what's a handsome gent to do?  If you fine men don't mind, may I make a suggestion (even though I will anyways)?

This summer, I came across a rising company based out of Annapolis, Starboard Clothing Company.  If you want the fine details, you can go to my earlier post by clicking here.  Long story short, Mr. Meredith knows how to rock the classic look with his creative bow ties that have unique names (one even named after the Naval Academy...The Midshipmen Beau), and has turned it into a successful business.

With plans to release a Fall/Winter 2011 Collection soon, I thought I would show you a few of Starboard Clothing Co.'s 'retired' beaus that have lead to my great anticipation of the upcoming collection:
(all beau photos courtesy of Starboard Clothing Co.'s website)
Harvard Classic Tweed Beau
I am such a sucker for tweed, this beau is perfect for the winter, and is a very fun and polished addition to any classic wardrobe...no wonder why it is sold out!
Meredith Private Tartan Beau
Named after Mr. Meredith himself, this beau is my favorite of the retired.  I love the colors within the beau as well as the woven wool material that makes tartan so unique.  This is old school classic.  I am in love.

Rudolph Christmas Plaid Beau
It sure will be a Merry Christmas with a beau like this one around your neck...I love the festive colors entwined in this plaid flannel beau.  A FLANNEL BOW TIE. Need I say more?

So, keep your eye on Starboard Clothing Co.'s website for the release of their collection! I am anxious to see what unique beaus Mr. Meredith thinks of next...and gents, do yourself a huge favor and invest in one of these!

P.S. Like me on Facebook!

Outfit of the Day: Meow!

Hey Preps!

Six mid-terms later... and it's fall break!  Not only fall break, but the best time of year in my community that involves crafts, foods, and SALES on Lilly Pulitzer, Vera Bradley, and Vineyard Vines...I am in heaven.  Everyone in college comes back for the weekend, and it is just a great time to see everyone you haven't seen in forever.

So finally it feels like fall, and here's what I'm rockin' today:
Rugby Polo Shirt
Tommy Hilfiger Corduroy Pants
L.L. Bean Ankle Boots
Military inspired jacket

It took me forever to take pictures today because my kitty kept trying to get in all the action...Meow!
Have a fabulous fall weekend!

'Fall' in Love with Tommy

Hey Preps!

Penny loafers, corduroys, tweed... Hello Fall clothes! Although I am not partial to the wintry weather ahead, I do love fall.  I love the changing of leaves, Fall festivals, and (most importantly) Fall clothes!  As someone who tends to dress in classic wears, there is no better time of the year to express my style than right now!

Many of you know that I have a mild obsession with designer, Tommy Hilfiger.  Yesterday I was shopping with my sister and an iconic picture of Tommy was hanging from a Macy's ad.  I waved at him, like he was there.  Yes, that is right...I acknowledged a picture of Mr. Hilfiger like it was he himself present.  My sister lost it.  She thinks I'm crazy.

So, now you know how weird I am (if you didn't already) and that I love Tommy.  What you don't know is that I am in love with his 2011 Fall (Ready to Wear) Collection...

From cute cords, cropped blazers, perfectly preppy shoes, and chunky sweaters...Hilfiger has created a masterpiece for the lady preps to example this Fall:

The perfect balance found in the chunky sweater paired with
dainty knee socks, and adorable heeled loafers...boyfriend with a feminine twist.

An outfit that I will be adding to my 'school wears' inspiration.
I have a tweed blazer that is worn too frequently...the extra flare
added with the plaid button-down.  I adore the dark skinny jeans...very flattering

Wool shorts are a fashion trend I have been dying to try.  The tights are
a great balance to the plaid pattern, and the belt worn is a great accessory.
As for the shoes...I DIE.

Loving the color combination here....olive, plumish, navy, pale blue?
Very creative, and it looks great! I love the skirt and how it is cinched with
the same belt from above...I tend to wear skirts with oxford shirts on a weekly basis.

Hi penny loafers!  They are my favorite shoe in the entire world.
I like how they are paired with an edgier pant like these paint distressed skinny jeans,
and the preppy wool blazer pulls together a classic look.

This reminds me of what my mom would have dressed me in...
back in the day...pennies in the loafers and all.  I love the jacket!

This outfit is great, I currently am freezing, and she just
looks so toasty.  I have a jacket/blazer just like this, and I love pairing it
with cords...this color of a cord is not traditional, but fits perfectly with
a classic wardrobe's color scheme!

For the Gents, Tommy has put together some creative wardrobe accents that I would love to see y'all in:

This chunky sweater reminds me of my childhood.
I love the wintry patterns, and the fact that is a button-up.
It is a suave casual look when paired with the
 jeans and casual oxford shoes.

Not sure how I feel about this model...is he GIGGLING?
What is he doing? I keep laughing when I look at it, so I'm just gonna
scroll down and avoid it.  However, I do love the jacket he is modeling!

He is just so cute (on the contrary)! Love the combination
of patterns used in contrasting the underlaying button-down oxford
with the adorable v-neck patterned sweater.  Do you know
any guys who cuff their jeans like this? Hook me up! (Pat don't read this)

Hello, we can get married now...only if you wear this
sweater to our wedding...
This sweater is like an ugly sweater party but it's not ugly?
I love that Tommy incorporated his Hounds into a sweater.  Adorable
What I really am fond of is those pants! Wowzers!

I love vests.  On guys.  Paired with this sweater,
perfect Tommy.

Finally, my favorite of all...all you Gents;
MODEL AFTER THIS!
Casual classic.  I love the layering.
I love the blazer.
I love the jeans (cuffed again).
Shoes are an A+

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy.  I love you.
What do y'all think?
